Where Was Ferris Bueller During My Spring Break?

My college spring break is officially over.

And it’s been a bit of a disappointment.

You see, I recently rewatched the 80s cinematic gem, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, and I suddenly wished that such an adventure would happen in my own life. My parents were gone for the weekend at the tail-end of my spring break, and I began to fantasize this opportunity as a chance to accomplish the dream of living a day much like the one in the movie.

Sadly, there are two problems with this.

Number one, I was left a list of chores to finish during their time away, and add onto that the homework I had procrastinated against that happened to be due before I went back to school, I had no time to myself.

And secondly, I am a Cameron Frye. And my two Ferris Buellers live too far away; one is located in Oklahoma, and the other in South Florida. We only get to see each other for maybe a week or so for a get-together each summer. Without a Ferris Bueller to drag me out, I drown in homework, chores, and self-pity.

So on the glorious weekend spent home alone, I did practically nothing. Technically I wasn’t home alone, my brother was home, and technically I did something, as on Saturday night I went to the local movie theater with said brother and watched the Lego Batman movie (which was awesome, by the way), but it wasn’t enough. I spent my days raking leaves and doing dishes, and my nights typing up papers.

So, my friends, the moral of the story is, if you’re a Cameron like me, and not a Ferris, and you’ve got some spare time on your hands, go out and do! Live! I’m not encouraging you to say “screw it” and throw your homework out the car window, I’m encouraging you to take a moment for yourself. Find that inner Ferris and have a good time. In the words of the great Ferris Bueller:

Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

  1. I LOVE Ferris Bueller! haha I definitely think that the appeal to him is that no one is actually that ballsy. You are very inspirational in that last paragraph and I might just take your advice.

  2. I’ve always wanted to consider myself Ferris. The dreamer, the doer, the “I don’t care how much trouble this my get me into but I’m doing it anyway”-er. However, I think I’m more of a Sloane Peterson. I do the right thing but if the opportunity for fun arises and I’m given a front row seat, OF COURSE I’m going to join in! ((Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is my favorite movie of all time and this blog post made me so happy.))

  3. To be honest, those “nothing days” are the best days one could ever have! The only thing that is so bad about them is that there’s always something you could be doing with your time but you just regret it.
